5 Books that every woman should read
1) Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
On Diligence, humility, modesty and great courage
Jane is a poor and plain woman. But she has the confidence and courage of an entire battalion. She is principled. She sets a high moral ground for herself and doesn't settle for less. The men in her life, can at no stage, coerce her into doing something against her will. She has a mind of her own and she is firm with her beliefs. She has a restless soul that loathes stagnation. She is constantly looking to challenge herself. Jane is forward and doesn't play the "coy woman" card. She expresses her love for a man far superior to her in social class, she expresses her hatred for her aunt who is her sole guardian. She doesn't mince words.
She is not a greedy woman, despite being from modest means herself, she is charitable. Jane is not envious, exacting or insecure. She is compassionate and giving. Every woman can learn so much from Jane Eyre. The next time you are at crossroads in life, pick up Jane Eyre and draw inspiration.
2) Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier
On the other woman
This book deals principally with what goes through the mind of the protagonist while she deals with the presence of the other woman. Despite the fact that Rebecca was far more beautiful and socially confident, the protagonist sticks it out. Of course, there are points in the story where she wants to give up, but the courage she musters to stick it out and make her husband fall in love with her is quite endearing. Moreover this book is interesting because it shows how the protagonist drives herself crazy by other thinking about Rebecca. She over analyses a situation that she later realizes is completely contrary to what she had been thinking. The next time you are driving yourself insane with insecure thoughts, pick up Rebecca.
3) The Painted Veil by Somerset Maugham
On adultery
This books deals with adultery. Plain and simple heart wrenching adultery.
The protagonist, Kitty Fayne, cheats on her loving husband and begins an affair with a married man. As a reader and the uninvolved third party you will clearly see how her one folly leads to events far inconceivable. How her folly kills all the love her husband had for her. As women, we are all guilty of being frivolous at some stage of our lives, if you are at that stage, or have been at that stage, do read The painted Veil
4) A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini
